It passes through 14 states, eight different national forests, six national park units and numerous state parks. Some portions of the trail are complete wilderness and require a trained and skilled hiker to endure the trek. Its not required to hike the complete length of the trail to enjoy its beauty, some enthusiasts may go on single or multi-day hikes as well.
