Maples

Acer is a genus of trees and shrubs commonly known as MAPLES. The genus is placed in the family Sapindaceae. There are approximately 132 species, most of which are native to Asia, with a number also appearing in Europe, northern Africa, and North America. Only one species, Acer laurinum, extends to the Southern Hemisphere. The type species of the genus is the sycamore maple, Acer pseudoplatanus, the most common maple species in Europe. The maples usually have easily recognizable palmate leaves (Acer negundo is an exception) and distinctive winged fruits. The closest relatives of the maples are the horse chestnuts. Maple syrup is made from the sap of some maple species. It is one of the most common genera of trees in Asia.

Wallpaper Description:

This is the first of 4 "neighborhood" wallpapers that I'm uploading. (My neighborhood, that is.)

If any of the 9 Autumn wallpapers I'm uploading today shows how odd Michigan's Fall season has been this year, this is the one.

There are lovely red & yellow leaves on this silver maple tree. Yet the tree in back of it is covered in fresh green leaves. And I only took this photograph on November 8th! week ago! Normally I would be getting a picture like this in late September or early October.

Even the silver maple seems confused. It looks like it's flinging it's limbs out in a giant shrug. I can almost hear it saying,

"Is it Fall Yet? You're asking ME? How would I know? Just look at the green tree behind me!"
