flamingos are a type of wading bird. The only genus in the family Phoenicopteridae. There are four flamingo species in the Americas and two species in the Old World. The Old World consists of Eurasia (that is, Europe and Asia) and Africa, regarded collectively as the part of the world known to Europeans before European contact with the Americas. It is used in the context of, and contrast with, the New World (consisting of North and South America and Oceania).
