60008 Dwight D. Eisenhower
Wallpaper Description:
“60008” Dwight D EisenhowerBuilt for the London and North Eastern Railway in 1937, the locomotive was originally numbered 4496 and named Golden Shuttle to reflect Yorkshire’s woollen industry.
It was renamed Dwight D Eisenhower after the Second World War. It was intended that Eisenhower would attend an official unveiling, but this could not be arranged.
The locomotive was cosmetically restored at the Doncaster Works in 1963 and was shipped to the USA the following Spring, arriving in New York harbour on 11 May 1964.
Since then it has been housed at the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay Wisconsin, USA.
It has travelled more than 1.4 million miles in main line service.
This is its first return to Britain.
