Magnificent Mandalas

What is Mandala?

The word "mandala" is from the classical Indian language of Sanskrit. Loosely translated to mean "circle," a mandala is far more than a simple shape. It represents wholeness, and can be seen as a model for the organizational structure of life itself--a cosmic diagram that reminds us of our relation to the infinite, the world that extends both beyond and within our bodies and minds.Mandalas are commonly used by tantric Buddhists as an aid to meditation.

In this group, you don't need to worry about sticking 100% to a religious meanings of mandalas. We would like to see shapes that reflect symmetry or, a motif of some kind. Your images can be circles, squares or rectangles. If rectangles, they have to have round or square central point. The rest I leave up to your imagination and preference.

Mandalas vs Fractals

Jee999
Jee99 says: 19 Months Ago
I like both these types of art but which is the best? Fractals contain some impressive colours but so do Mandalas. Mandalas have some exciting patterns - but then so do fractals. Mandalas have a fascinating history - but fractals have a scientific background.
Mandalas have many facets as do fractals but I find most Mandalas are fractal like so really I suppose Mandalas are the best in many ways. Some fractals are definitely bright brash and insensitive whereas I find most Mandalas are bright, interesting and soothing on the mind. What do you think?

Jee99,
thx. for your comment. This is a very interesting topic. I find that to a Western mind like mine, mandala is a blur between a fractal image and a doily. I love them all regardless of their color, mood, pattern, shape (circle or square) and must admit, my mandalas reflect that confusion of this Eastern concept. If anyone finds that any of my images don't fit the category of mandalas, please don't be shy to speak out. They will be deleted. This could be useful to help us all learn the concept and hopefully inspire us to try harder. I know I would.
