At an anime convention I went to last year they had one of the K-On English dub actresses there to speak, sing and sign autographs. She had such a high pitched voice it hurt XD A great example of a voice actor is Crispin Freeman. He signed my Hellsing (plays Alucard) and Chobits (plays Hideki) dvd covers :D.

I don't think English dubs are bad. English voice acting has come a long way in the past 10 years :D. I started Bakemonogatari which is only in subs and for some reason a lot of the dialogue such as jokes just aren't coming across as well as I think it would in dub. Maybe it's the way it was translated.

I agree that jokes don't always translate well from Japanese to another language. Its one reason I liked what ADV did with the City Hunter TV subs over here, before the start of an episode they would have a screen that would appear giving info about the joke/special reference in the episode that was about to play.

Skye, you might be luck in having better suited voice actors over there than we do here. The dubs for Sword Art Online sound like they have senior citizens voicing them, and not voice actors that actually sound like their in their mid-teens early 20's. Plus dubbing quality also makes a difference, when you have rushed lines or they don't match-up at all its a big knock against dubs (Tokyopop's work on the Initial D).

I don't know Japanese either, but when it comes to the English dubs they usually suck. Thats why I prefer subs, but sometimes I'm so used to dubs when that was the only ones available, and now just can't get used to the subs (You're Under Arrest is a great example of that).
