Let's kick off the photography thread with suggestions for a nice (inexpensive) SLR.

My roommate (rob) has a Nikon D40 (I think), and it takes absolutely incredible pictures. I personally sport a $150 Canon and it just doesn't cut it.

So I ask, what do you guys think the best camera is for the buck?

I'd say the Sony a300 is the most complete package for an entry-level dSLR, but if a Nikon D40/60 suits your needs, go for it since they're about $100-150 cheaper.

My current digital is an Olympus 10 megapix - 5x zoom. I really like the Olympus SLR and there have been some really good deals on it here in Canada which have included a telephoto lens in a package deal. The megapix is 12.3 so it's not enough of an improvement for me to spring for a new camera just yet, but I'm looking forward to getting one in the not too distant future.

I love my Olypmpus and the support is fantastic. Better yet it's made in North America (although I'm sure some the innards come from overseas).

Handhelds with 10mpx or more are becoming amazingly comparable to dslr's.

Maybe chose wiser option with actual value vs money
