Higher Resolutions Please

Hi everyone;

There are a lot of wallpapers being posted that I would really enjoy; but, alas, they are 1024x768 most often than not, or even in one case 800x600. Folks, its 2009, even the most humble video card and monitor combo is running wide screen at much higher resolutions. Lets get some decent sized wallpapers up here shall we?

Are you referring to just Linux wallpapers, or the whole site?

Komodo, looking around, I'd say pretty much the whole site. I realize there are some decent sized wallpapers, but there is an extraordinary amount that are low res. There have even been a few that were upscaled and are terribly blurry as a result; btw to new wallpaper poster/creator people, your end result will generally only be as good as your worst element gigo is the way it works.

Anyway, not so much a complaint as it is a critique, so far I think this wallpaper forum is one of the nicest communities I've seen in a very long time. Everyone here has been very warm and kind.

Best wishes,

Most 17" screens are either set at 1024X768 or 1152X864, it's actually quite a common size. I have mine set at 1152X864, and so that's normally the size I upload, I'd like my walls to be able to be used by most people. I understand what you're saying though. Cheers!

The higher the resolution, the wider the audience can use them.
1024x768 is only going to look decent on a 1024x768 or smaller monitor; 2048x1536 will look great on a MUCH wider range of monitors (just doubled the resolution). Bigger is definitely better in this particular game, the bigger it is the more monitors it supports.
Thanks for the efforts though, this is a really great forum, with a really solid community.

Well, unfortunately the vast majority of people looking for wallpapers are 1024x768 or 1280x1024.

Our site has a solid arsenal of technology for managing different resolution wallpapers, and we always do encourage people to upload the largest size image they have, and our servers will automatically scale the image down for smaller screens (while maintaining quality). I have a few ideas for "promoting" ultra-high resolution images, but right now it's just that... an idea. Until then, we just need to build the best community we can out of what members upload. :)

I agree it would be nice if people would use larger images, however as people learn from experience, hopefully they will learn how to upload better quality and higher res images, the best thing would be to have a thread on how this is done, if there isn't already one.
all credit to the DN people, this a very friendly site, I love it. Thanks to all for a great experience and the great walls. For those new to design, there are plenty of people here who would love to help improve your walls, no one here bites, well not very hard.
