I know ClamAV is well-known for virus scanning... but does anyone have any suggestions for linux-based spyware scanners?

I'd essentially like a great AV program, and a linux-based program like Ad-Aware or Spybot.

Suggestions?

Thanks. :)

Are you wanting to scan for files before moving them to a windows partition? Or are you worried about spyware/adware infesting your Linux OS.

I personally only scan files before allowing them access to a windows partition or network, I currently have no need of virus/spyware/adware detection for my linux environment. Here is a great post about the subject http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=708380

That said, you can use Wine or a Virtual Machine to scan for spyware/adware on linux partitions. Most of the good AV producers have linux native Antivirus/adware/spyware detectors/removers (usually free versions as well). Heres a nice list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_malware

I hope I've been of some help.

Thanks. I'm planning on scanning windows binaries natively in linux/unix from the command line. I'm obviously not worried about spyware in linux.

I'd rather stay away from wine or a virtual machine, because I'm looking to scan a large number of files, and stability is a must. Are there any native applications for spyware scanning? Essentially I need a clamav for spyware. :)

Thanks.

Have you looked into Kaspersky Linux Editions? They have just about everything you'd need to scan for windows viri before allowing the files to be accessed by your network.

I know that most of the real AV's have Linux versions, I tend to like Kasperksy best at the moment. Avira, Avast, and AVG (listed in my personal opinion of quality) all also have Linux editions of their AV, so you can scan files natively.

In my experience, no AV is required on Linux. I've been using Linux for 9 years with no AV and absolutely no infections. However, the previous comment about scanning a group of files for Windows type malware is a great idea if you plan to send them to a Windows user.

A person using Linux can go years without a problem, but since Windows viruses don't effect Linux, they ignore them. I really don't transfer that many files to friends and if you decide to do that, it might be better to make sure they have up to date AV running.

Another way, is to send them with Gmail. it has advanced virus scanning (for windows) built in. However, Gmail will not send .exe (executable) files. Personally, I don't want to mess up my Linux by running scanning AV. Exceptional security is why I got away from Windows.

If everyone used Linux, we wouldn't be talking about this.
