Frequently Asked Questions
Q. I uploaded a wallpaper, but now I can't find it. Where did it go?
Desktop Nexus is a completely community-driven system. That said, we also want to ensure our galleries always remain high quality, so we have put in place a Pending Addition step. Whenever you upload a wallpaper, rather than going straight to the gallery (category) you specified, it instead goes to a unique category called Pending Addition (usually at the end of the category list in the navigation bar), where members will spend the next few days or weeks voting to approve or disapprove your wallpaper. If enough people vote to approve it, your wallpaper is then automatically moved to the category you previously specified. If enough members vote to delete your wallpaper, it will be purged from the system permanently. For reasons why your wallpaper might get deleted, note the following question. This Pending Addition system allows only the very best wallpapers to enter our galleries, and filters out the spam and lower-quality submissions.
Q. Why do my wallpapers keep getting deleted?
The Pending Additions category is a place to filter through the good and bad quality wallpapers, assuring only the best get added to the Desktop Nexus galleries. During this stage, members have the choice to vote against the wallpaper being added, which usually happens for one of a few common reasons:
1) The wallpaper is a duplicate of another in the system. Please double and triple check this before resubmitting.
2) The wallpaper is poor quality. This includes wallpapers that are slightly blurry, pixelized, grainy, or have an obstructing object, such as a lens flair or poorly placed lamp post. A member might also vote for deletion if the wallpaper is simply not anything unique or impressive (wallpaper quality).
3) The wallpaper shows excessive advertising. A small "By:" line is fine, but some wallpapers have a three-inch-tall watermark across the middle of the image... and that would probably not get approved.
4) The wallpaper violates the Submission Guidelines - for example, it might be offensive to some people.
If your sure your wallpaper doesn't match any of these problems, yet it keeps getting deleted in Pending Addition, and you've double checked it wasn't actually approved and moved to the gallery already, feel free to contact us and we'll take a look at it. :)
Q. What should / shouldn't I tag a wallpaper with?
Tagging is the foundation of the Desktop Nexus system. It allows users to connect wallpapers together based on common attributes, effectively creating groups of similar images. When tagging a wallpaper, consider what descriptive words you would use if you were to search for that image later. Some good tags are "convertible, beach, sand, sunset, palm trees"... very simple words that effectively describe the wallpaper. From that list, each tag is meaningful and broad enough to actually overlap on other wallpapers. If a user clicks on convertible, they're sure to find many other cars that are convertibles. If they click on sunsets, there's little question what types of wallpapers they'll find.
Try to avoid tagging with long or overly-detailed tags, such as "The Prado Museum in Madrid Spain", as there is almost zero chance of someone else tagging another wallpaper with that exact tag. A better idea is to break that up into three, smaller tags, such as "Prado Museum, Museum, Madrid, Spain". This way, it adds this image into the tag group of all "Madrid" wallpapers, all "Spain" wallpapers, all wallpapers of museums, and all wallpapers of the specific "Prado Museum"... rather than the original overly detailed tag, leaving the wallpaper in a group by itself, with less chance to be found.
Now, on the other hand, try to avoid using overly broad tags as well. Tagging a BMW wallpaper with "car" doesn't narrow it down much, since there are thousands of other cars in that subdomain, and nearly all BMWs are cars. Instead try to tag that wallpaper with things like "e46" (the body style) or "M3" (the car's model).
Only move to describe the background of the wallpaper if you cannot think of enough descriptive tags for the central focus of it. For instance, describe the bird before the ocean and clouds behind it.
Tags are only used to visually describe the wallpaper itself, not express opinions. Please don't use tags such as "I hate baseball" or "great picture". Those types of situations would more appropriately be expressed as a comment.
Finally, try not to tag a wallpaper with the category or subcategory it's in already. In the previous BMW example, please don't tag the wallpaper with "BMW", as it's assumed that all wallpapers uploaded to the BMW category are in fact BMWs.
Q. Why does the left navigation menu keep changing?
Desktop Nexus is one of the most technologically advanced wallpaper websites in the entire world. Since we cover such a broad range of topics, we.ve taken steps to ensure we adapt to the latest trends. Under each subcategory (Honda, Bears, etc) you.ll see a list of sub-subcategories (Civic, Panda Bear, etc). The sub-subcategories are calculated from a formulated standard deviation of all the tags on the wallpapers in that subcategory. Basically, our servers are constantly watching the tags on all the Honda (for example) wallpapers in the system to find which tags are most popular, such as Civic, Ridgeline, etc. It then adds a direct link to under the subcategory in the navigation menu to give you the quick, easy ability to further filter down your browsing. Why would we go to all this trouble? Say Honda releases a new car, such as the Fit. If there.s a sudden influx of wallpapers to the Honda subcategory tagged with "Fit", we assume it's something new and hot in that area, so there's probably going to be a high-demand for wallpapers on it. Our system will pick that trend up, and automatically add a link to Fit under the Honda subcategory.
Q. One of the wallpapers on your site violates my copyright. Will you remove it?
Of course! Desktop Nexus respects all copyrights and trademarks, and we are compliant with the DMCA Copyright Act of 1998. There are links to all our policies in the footer of every page on this website. If you are the lawful copyright holder of a wallpaper that one of our users uploaded to the site, please use our contact form or the information in our DMCA notice to submit a deletion request. We will request you display proof of your identity and your legal ownership of the copyright, following which we will completely remove the wallpaper from all our systems.
Q. How do I get the "Uploaded By" tag to show my username?
If you're logged in to your Desktop Nexus account when you upload a wallpaper, it'll automatically credit that wallpaper to you, linking to your MyDN account. If you are not logged in when you upload a wallpaper, it'll show "Uploaded By: Anonymous".
