Hi everyone!

We’re very proud to announce the launch of the brand new Desktop Nexus community discussion forums! It is located at http://www.desktopnexus.com/forum/, or by clicking the “Forum” link in the black navigation bar at the top of all pages. We built these forums to allow everyone on DN to get to know each other on a more personal level, interacting in a medium more unified than comments or private messages.

If you have never used a forum before, it’s no different than commenting on wallpapers. Each individual topic for discussion is called a “Thread”, and the collection of threads make up the forum. Once you start a thread, anyone can reply and interact about your topic. For example, you might post a new thread with a question that you’re wondering about, and the other members will (hopefully) speak up and answer you.

Those of you who are more experienced with forums, you might notice this one is slightly different than the rest. After long periods of deliberation, we decided to not simply deploy a vBulletin or phpBB boxed software, because it would not be a very good fit for a wallpaper site like ours. Desktop Nexus already has functionality in place to handle account profiles, private messages, moderators, secure logins, etc… in fact the only element of a forum we were missing was the threads themselves! From this, we’ve decided to develop our own custom forum, building on the great foundation we’ve already built here at Desktop Nexus. This means the forum is tightly integrated with your Desktop Nexus account and the learning curve will be minimal… but it also means the forum won’t have a lot of the fancy bells and whistles that the big forums have. We’re going to continue developing this forum over the long-term, adding features as they become necessary.

Another cool aspect of the Desktop Nexus forum is the tight integration with tags. We’ve linked these parts of the site, so members can engage in discussions specifically around the most popular wallpaper tags, essentially giving every major interest its own medium for conversation. This will allow the Britney Spears fans (for example) to discuss concerts, news, and anything else related to Britney. If you visit the tag page itself (Britney Spears Wallpapers) you’ll also notice a discussion block that appears in the top-right corner. This shows quick previews (teasers) from the most recent threads in the Britney forum, as well as reaching out and asking any guest visitors to join in the discussion. You can see the most popular tag forums at http://www.desktopnexus.com/forum/tags/.

So far it’s looking like the forum will be a great success! We’ve already had over 500 posts over a wide range of categories, from Harry Potter to Ferrari’s. Stop by and introduce yourself to the community, and let us know what you think!

Thanks guys!
